Fusuma are traditional Japanese sliding panels used as doors or room dividers. They are opaque and often covered in painted paper or fabric. Many feature hand-painted landscapes or abstract designs.

Unlike shoji, which filter light through translucent paper and a wooden grid, fusuma block it and create a solid visual boundary.

For the boutique bed and breakfast Okaeri Calistoga, we created two fusuma-inspired installations.

The first is a lighted fusuma-style artbox in one of the seven suites, featuring hand-painted silk cherry blossoms by local artist Eva-Lena Rehnmark.

The second is a set of mural doors in the reception area, where hand-painted fabric is set in custom extra-wide frames to form a two-sided sliding mural. One panel is fixed to the wall while the other moves along a track, creating a layered, shifting composition.
